Through my research I found that the mystery’s plot revolves around a crime/solving a crime and uses suspense to create the story. The main protagonist is usually a detective and the supporting characters are “suspects”. There is usually a victim as well. Tension is built in the story using foreshadowing, as well as plot twists, suspects’ motives and alibis. Since I will be limited to only creating an opening sequence in my film, I will have to do my best to establish the main character, the victim, and what the mystery revolves around instead of focusing on other main elements of mystery such as suspects.

Some elements of the Mystery Genre in film:

  1. Cinematography: the mystery genre is usually characterized by grungy settings and dim lighting that contributes to the overall mystery as characters and places are shrouded in darkness
  2. Sound: Suspenseful music, strings usually used to build tension. Example: The Shining, Us
